I don't work with oil pastels much, but I like this old picture.

I hadn't been thinking of Rouault at all, but after looking at some of his work I see what you mean.

I've become more interested in religious art lately like he was, but I've also been getting more precise and detailed lately as opposed to his bolder, more free style. I love oils but haven't practiced with them in a while. This picture is probably four years old. Looking at it again inspires new ideas though.

To think that he burned 300 of his pieces befor he died! Although sometimes I look at my old stuff and want to throw stones at it.

I didn't have anything particular in mind, the subject and setting were figments of my imagination. I just sat down in my living room one night and drew it. There's something I've always loved about drawing depressed or intense-looking older men with facial hair. I think one reason is that I personally find that this subject matter is not only forgiving but it is the best subject matter for expressing emotions, better than say women or young people. It's pretty small, only about 5" by 3", but I really liked how well it turned out. I think I only have one more piece like this that I can find.

I haven't attempted a self-portrait in a while but I plan to take a stab at it again soon. I'm glad I never got rid of those oils...
